Wisdom Teeth Removal in Vaudreuil-Dorion: Should You Book Before the Holidays?

A dull ache at the back of your jaw, swollen gums behind your last molar, or a dentist who pointed at your wisdom teeth on your last X-ray? If you’re looking into wisdom teeth removal in Vaudreuil-Dorion, this guide walks you through what to expect. And with the year winding down, now is often a smart time to think about it: your insurance benefits, the holiday break and the school calendar can all work in your favour.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, the last teeth at the very back of the mouth. They usually come in between ages 18 and 20, sometimes as early as 14 to 16. Because our jaws are smaller than they used to be, there often isn’t enough room for them. They can stay trapped under the gum or in the bone (“impacted”), grow in at an angle, or only partly break through.

Their position also makes them hard to reach with a toothbrush and floss, so they’re more prone to cavities and gum problems.

Do wisdom teeth always need to come out?

Not always. A wisdom tooth that is well positioned, healthy and easy to clean can sometimes stay. A 2020 Cochrane review found there isn’t enough evidence to recommend routinely removing impacted wisdom teeth that cause no symptoms. So the decision is made case by case, together with you, based on your exam and X-rays. If you keep them, regular checkups let us keep an eye on them (source: Cochrane).

Signs it’s time for a checkup

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the mouth or in the jaw
  • Red, swollen or tender gums behind your last molar
  • A bad taste or bad breath that keeps coming back in the same spot
  • Trouble opening your mouth all the way
  • Food that keeps getting stuck in the same place

These signs don’t automatically mean a tooth has to come out, but they’re worth having checked. Facial swelling can point to an infection, so call us right away if that happens (see our Emergency page and our article on tooth and gum abscesses).

A common myth

Many people believe wisdom teeth push the front teeth and make them crowded. In fact, wisdom teeth coming in are not what causes the front teeth to shift.

Wisdom teeth removal in Vaudreuil-Dorion: what happens

At our clinic in the Polyclinique médicale, 600 Harwood Boulevard, wisdom teeth extraction is part of our surgical procedures. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Exam and X-rays: we look at the position of each tooth, the space available and nearby structures, then explain your options, including waiting and monitoring.
  2. Treatment day: the area is usually numbed with local anesthesia. You may feel pressure or hear some sounds, which is normal. How long it takes depends on the position and number of teeth.
  3. Nervous about it? Options such as conscious sedation (oral sedation or nitrous oxide) and dental hypnosis are available. Ask about them at your consultation. Bringing headphones and your own music can help too.

Recovery: what to expect

The first 3 to 4 days are usually the most uncomfortable, then swelling and tenderness gradually ease. Take the medication your dentist recommends, stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days, and follow our postoperative advice. If anything worries you, give us a call.

Not sure which pain reliever to pick? Our article on over-the-counter pain medication explains the differences, but always follow your dentist’s or pharmacist’s advice.

Why book before the holidays?

Time off to heal

For many CEGEP and university students, the December break means a few days without classes. For working adults, holiday time off can make recovery easier too. Just plan the procedure several days before your get-togethers, not the day before Christmas Eve dinner!

Use this year’s insurance benefits

Many private dental plans run on the calendar year, and unused annual maximums usually don’t carry over into January. Check with your insurer, and read our article on dental insurance at year end. We can also give you a cost estimate to send to your insurer before treatment.

Covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The CDCP includes removal of teeth among its covered services, while conscious sedation requires preauthorization. Keep in mind that the CDCP pays according to its own fee guide, which isn’t aligned with Quebec dental fees. Even at a “100%” coverage level, there is almost always a balance left to pay. The Auditor General of Canada’s report, tabled on October 29, 2026, noted that enrolment letters did not clearly explain that members may still have some costs to pay. Our team can give you an estimate before treatment. Learn more on the Government of Canada’s CDCP coverage page.

Wisdom teeth FAQ

What age should wisdom teeth be removed?

There’s no set age. They often appear between 18 and 20, and an exam in the teen or early adult years shows how they’re developing. Whether they should come out depends on their position and your situation.

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

The procedure itself is done under local anesthesia, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some discomfort is normal during the first few days of healing.

How long is wisdom teeth recovery?

The first 3 to 4 days are usually the toughest. Most people then ease back into their normal routine, depending on the procedure.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost?

It depends on how many teeth, their position and how complex the extraction is. We’ll give you an estimate after your exam that you can submit to your insurer.

Will my wisdom teeth make my other teeth crooked?

No. Wisdom teeth coming in are not what makes the front teeth shift.
